Olivier De Schutter is a professor at the University of Louvain (UCL) and at SciencesPo. A specialist of economic and social rights and a former Secretary General of the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) (2004-2008), he was the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right to food between 2008 and 2014 and has been elected a Member of the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights for 2015-2018. In his capacity as UN Special Rapporteur on the right to food, he organised and led over twenty long-term missions in all regions, particularly in Africa (Benin, Madagascar, South Africa, Cameroon, Malawi, in Latin America (Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Brazil) and in Asia (China, India, Malaysia, Syria). His writing is focused upon global governance and human rights, with an astute emphasis on trade and investment and on how they relate to the realisation of economic and social rights.
